START THE DAY WITH INTENTION
Ask yourself this question:
What do you want to feel like today and how will you get there?
Write it down and try to focus on a feeling, then list the activities that will help you have a day of your design. We often wake up and dive right into response mode: things happen and we are forced to respond. This can make it feel like our days are not in our control - like someone or some circumstance is choosing for us how we will live today. If you know what you wish to use your day for before anyone or anything has the opportunity to influence you, it will be easier to make choices that serve YOUR plan. Then it's just ready, set, ACTION and you can play the part that serves your intention.
Once you know what you want out of your day, stick to it and avoid the habit of distraction. Thoughtlessly opening a social app or turning on the tv can be a fast route to derailing the intentionality of your day. Getting what you want out of your day is not effortless - it requires being aware of unhelpful habits and distractions that creep into our sanctuary of mindfulness.
DON'T GET DISCOURAGED
If a cog is thrown in your wheel, don't let it bog you down. A sick kid, an un-anticipated work task or even simply forgetting a commitment you made can easily derail your intention for the day. If this happens, pause, breathe, and think about what response will best serve your goal. Almost always, a thoughtful pause, patience with yourself and others, and good humor will keep you on track.
