Indigenous people were the first to use the Prickly Pear Cactus as food, as medicine and even for fashion. There are records of the large spines being used as needles and the juice from the ripe fruit became a deep, colorful dye for textiles.

The prickly pear cactus has been used for hundreds of years as food and as medicine:
- It is high in antioxidants. Antioxidants can protect our cells from damage caused by free radicals. Nopal cactus is full of 'em!
- It can regulate blood sugar levels. Regulating blood sugar can be a huge struggle for people with diabetes. Some research indicates that nopal cactus can decrease and regulate blood sugar.
- The cactus is high in fiber, essential fatty acid, carotenoids and contains magnesium, phosphorus, calcium and potassium, as well as trace vitamins and minerals.
