Our favorite caffeinated beverage does something mysteriously amazing: it simultaneously energizes and calms. The effects of the tea plant, Camellia sinensis, come from the combination of caffeine, Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and L-theanine.
EGCG is a catechin associated with weight loss, disease prevention, cognitive function, and calmness.
L-theanine is an amino-acid that generates lower-frequency brain waves (Alpha Waves). Alpha brainwaves are associated with relaxation, meditation, and creativity. Research also suggests that alpha brainwaves minimize depressive symptoms.
The caffeine in tea provides stimulation, which is countered by the calming effects of EGCG and L-theanine. The result is that drinking tea can improve our mental focus and attention, while creating peaceful feelings. In other words, it can make us feel like we are "in the zone."
The mystical and enchanting tea plant, Camellia sinensis, produces several varieties of tea including white, green, black, oolong, and pu erh tea.
