Summerville Sweet Tea
the best glass of sweet tea is always the one you drink on the porch
A History of Sweet Tea & Porch Sittin'
In the late 1700's, the tea plant, Camellia sinensis, traveled all the way from China and ended up being successfully cultivated in South Carolina, which also became the birthplace of sweet tea a few years later.
Porches and sweet tea = a match made in heaven. Sweet tea was born in Summerville, South Carolina, in the late 1800's, around the same time when the concept of porches emerged in an effort to keep homes cool during the hot summer heat. Coincidentally, it turns out that sipping a sweetened iced tea while rocking on a creaky chair on the porch of a humble farmhouse is downright charming. The practice turned into a go-to hospitality offering, particularly in the south.
